Sunday Brunch at Joyce Soul & Sea: Vibes, Flavor, and Southern Comfort in DTLA

Some brunch spots just get it. Joyce Soul & Sea in downtown LA is one of them. From the second we walked in, the energy was warm, stylish, and effortlessly cool. The decor? Thoughtfully curated—every corner, from the entrance to the bathroom, felt intentional and inviting. And the food? Let’s just say it had us planning our return before we even finished our plates.

First Bite: Edisto Island Cornbread

We kicked things off with the Edisto Island Cornbread, served with whipped sorghum butter, hickory smoked salt, and pepper. If you love cornbread, prepare to be obsessed. This isn’t your average side—it’s rich, slightly sweet, and has just enough smokiness to keep things interesting. The whipped sorghum butter took it over the top.

The Mains: Oxtails & French Toast Done Right

For my main, I had the Curry Braised Oxtails & Sweet Potato Hash, topped with eggs over easy. Listen—this dish was unreal. The oxtails were so tender they practically melted, and the curry braise gave them a deep, soulful flavor that just worked. Also, no salt and pepper shakers on the table? No need. Every bite was seasoned to perfection. This one’s a newer menu item, and I’m seriously hoping it sticks around.

My girlfriend went for the Crunchy Panko French Toast with bourbon-soaked peaches, and I had to steal a bite (for research, of course). It was golden and crispy on the outside, soft and warm inside, with the peaches adding just the right amount of boozy sweetness. A dream of a dish.

Sippin’ Pretty: Blackness in Bloom

To wash it all down, I ordered the Blackness in Bloom iced latte—hibiscus, oat milk, cardamom, rose, and honey. Sweet, floral, and just creamy enough, it was the perfect balance to my meal. Not too heavy, not too sweet—just right.

Final Take: Joyce is a Whole Mood

Joyce Soul & Sea is the kind of place that makes you want to linger (and linger we did). The vibes are effortless, the food is incredible, and the menu is stacked with soulful, coastal-inspired dishes that hit every note. Whether you’re craving something savory, sweet, or somewhere in between, they’ve got you covered. Do yourself a favor and book that table at joycela.com—because this spot is definitely one to keep in rotation. I’ll be back for sure.
